August 2021 Technology Update

Directions on using FMX:1. Go to https://loganelm.gofmx.com. 2. There are 3 login boxes. Click on the "Log In with AD FS" gray box. 3. Enter your email address (first.last@loganelm.org) and your password that you use to access your email. Click on the "Create Request" button in the upper right corner and choose the type of request you need to add. I have added the "Log on with Google" for students. They only have rights to create tech requests. They cannot complete maintenance or field trip requests.

Securly Classroom: Our contract with Blocksi will be up soon and we did not renew it due to many outages and cost. Our new chromebook management application is Securly Classroom. Teachers should have received an email from me about this that contained a link to a 15 minute presentation. Below are additional resources.

Chromebooks: All chromebooks are ready to be distributed to students. All high school chromebooks are in the library by grade level and are in alphabetical order. All McDowell chromebooks are in the library storage area in carts by grade level and are in alphabetical order. All chromebooks at Salt Creek and elementaries are in homerooms in carts and are in alphabetical order. If you are missing chromebooks, either it was not turned in or there may have been a schedule change. Please let me know or see your building administrator for missing chromebooks. Consequently, if you have a chromebook for a student that is not in your homeroom, please let me know or give it to your building administrator. We use a program (One2One Manager) to assign chromebooks to students and need to make sure the information is accurate, especially when we need to bill students for repairs.

Chromebook chargers: Schools that send chromebooks home (grades 5-12) may want to consider labeling chargers when passed out, This will help in making sure we have collected chargers at the end of the school year. Some schools kept track in a spreadsheet, but this may slow down dispensing of chromebooks when you need to verify a student turned in a charger.

Multi-factor authentication: Due to all of the ransomware attacks and malware, our insurance carrier is requiring multi-factor authentication on our email accounts. What is multi-factor authentication? Multi-factor authentication is when you must provide two or more pieces of evidence to verify your identity to gain access to an app or digital resource. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is used to protect against hackers by ensuring that digital users are who they say they are. I will turn on MFA on our Microsoft 365 (@loganelm.org) accounts first and you will use your Google account (@loganelmschools.com) to verify. Once all M365 accounts have completed setup of MFA, I will turn on MFA on our Google accounts. You will use your M365 account to verify. You will have the ability to use another method (SMS, Authenticator app) to verify.

Print to ANY copier driver on Windows laptops/desktops: You need to have this driver installed to print to our copiers. It is installed by default on desktops and laptops that are joined to our active directory domain. If you are experiencing issues printing to copiers, open an FMX technology request.

Be Internet Awesome: Google has updated their Internet safety website and now has many more activities and resources. The URL is https://beinternetawesome.withgoogle.com/en_us.

Calendly/FMX: When you fill out a tech request for a desktop/laptop issue which will require remote assistance, you can go ahead and schedule a time for the remote session. Click here to access my Calendly page. Also, you can find the link on my technology page.

BitWarden: In the past, I have recommended LastPass for password management. LogMeIn purchased LastPass and is making changes to the free version, in which you must choose to use it on desktops or mobile devices, not both. In addition, they have increased the premium price from $12 to $36 a year. As a result, I have moved to BitWarden as my password manager. The free version does everything I need it to do and the premium version is $10 a year. For more information, go to https://bitwarden.com.
